Random

I thought there was no call for setting up separate pages for bands who will only be making a single appearance here, so I’ve grouped them under random.

Getting away with it (All messed up): Seems to encapsulate my persönlich Zeitgeist of the period since graduation. Must be heard for full effect!

Vincent:This song is a tribute to one of my most favourite painters, Vincent Van Gogh. A beautiful song, and look at the imagery it provokes.

Ship of Fools:Robert Plant at his finest, with weaving lyrics.

Superstitious:Stevie the Wonder. This song never fails to get me grooving; the bass line is so meaty and funky and Stevie just floats around the lyrics!

But Anyway:Blues Traveler with wonderfully twisting lyrics.

Lady Jane:A song by Queensryche, very strong overtones of something sinister. Maybe it’s just the way it’s sung. If I’m missing something here, (like Lady Jane = Marihuana or something) please let me know.

I wish I knew how it feels to be free:A soaring song by Nina, full of longing.

I woke up in a strange place:The operatic voice of Jeff Buckley singing this masterpiece live is something special to behold.

Californication:Red Hot Chilli Peppers with a damning indiction of Californian “culture” in every line.

Angie:A song that was written for one of my first real loves. Ahh, my poor liddle heart!

Holy Smoke: Iron Maiden in full flow.

My Favourite Game: My favourite game. Cardigans

Mother’s little helper:The Rolling Stones on how bad it is to take drugs. Hmm…?

Feeling good:Nina Simone at her finest.

Too much love will kill you:Freddie Mercury’s soaring voive agonising over the lyrics. Beaut!

Lush Life:

Fire and rain:James Taylor and a lost friend.

No one knows:Great QOTSA song, Dave Grohl rocks the drums.

Waiting for darkness:An Ozzy song that I love. From Bark at the Moon

Lost in the Ozone:A Motorhead song from my Moscow times that pops up in my head evey now and then.

A design for life:The Manic Street Preachers in a beautiful melody.

Getting away with it (All messed up)
(James)

Are you aching for the blade?
That’s OK, we’re insured
Are you aching for the grave?
That’s OK, we’re insured

We’re getting away with it all messed up
Getting away with it all messed up
That’s the living

Daniel’s saving Grace
She’s out in deep water
Hope he’s a good swimmer
Daniel plays his ace
Deep inside his temple
He knows how to serve her

We’re getting away with it all messed up
Getting away with it all messed up
That’s the living
We’re getting away with it all messed up
Getting away with it all messed up
That’s the living

Daniel drinks his weight
Drinks like Richard Burton
Dance like John Travolta
Now
Daniel’s saving Grace
He was all but drowning
Now they live like dolphins

We’re getting away with it all messed up
Getting away with it all messed up
That’s the living
We’re getting away with it all messed up
Getting away with it all messed up
That’s the living

We’re getting away with it all messed up
Getting away with it all messed up
That’s the living
Oh, getting away with it all messed up
Getting away with it all messed up
That’s the living

Getting away with it
We’re getting away with it
That’s the living
That’s the living

Vincent
(Don McLean)

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer’s day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they’ll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist’s loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they’ll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as
beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can’t forget
Like the strangers that you’ve met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they’re not listening still
Perhaps they never will

Ship of fools
(Robert Plant)

On waves of love my heart is breaking
And stranger still my self control
I can’t rely on anymore
New tides surprise my world is changing
Within this frame an ocean swells
Behind this smile I know it well

Beneath a lover’s moon I’m waiting
I am the pilot of the storm
Adrift in pleasure I may drown
I built this ship it is my making
And furthermore my self control
I can’t rely on anymore

I know why
I know why
Crazy on a ship of fools
Crazy on a ship of fools
Turn this boat around back to my loving ground

Who claims that no man is an island
While I land up in jeopardy
More distant from you by degrees
I walk this shore in isolation
And at my feet eternity
draws ever sweeter plans for me

I know why
I know why
Crazy on a ship of fools
Oh, crazy on a ship of fools
Turn this boat around back to my loving ground
Oh no, oh no Ship of fools

But Anyway
(Blues Traveler)

I lied and told her I loved her
She didn’t care, but anyway
I told her we’d still be friends,
And she didn’t care, but anyway
I tried last week for to call her,
She wasn’t home, but anyway
I think I’ll spend my life alone,
I really don’t care right now, but anyway

It’s a state of affairs and a state of emotions
The kind of thing that you must understand
I tell you one thing; you tell me another
We walk away, maybe then shake hands

I’m quitting cigarette smoking
It’s bad for me, but anyway
I don’t think the TV was joking
When it told me this, but anyway
The newsman said not to sit on strange toilet seats
It’s my life he’s trying to save, but anyway
I found out that I’ve got eye cancer
Too many television waves, but anyway

It’s a state of affairs and a state of emotions
The kind of thing that you must understand
I tell you one thing; you tell me another
We walk away, maybe then shake hands

Some day an answer will find us
Quite a long shot, but anyway
I think the past, the past is behind us
Be real confusing if not, but anyway
I put all my hope in tomorrow
It’s gonna be great, I can tell but anyway
I see a new, a new day a dawning
I like to sleep late, oh well, but anyway

It’s a state of affairs and a state of emotions
The kind of thing that you must understand
I tell you one thing; you tell me another
We walk away, maybe then shake hands

Superstitious
(Stevie Wonder)

Very superstitious, writing’s on the wall
Very superstitious, ladders bout’ to fall
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin’ glass
Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past

When you believe in things that you don’t understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain’t the way

Very superstitious, wash your face and hands
Rid me of the problem, do all that you can
Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin’ strong
You don’t wanna save me, sad is my song

When you believe in things that you don’t understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain’t the way, yeh, yeh

Very superstitious, nothin’ more to say
Very superstitious, the devil’s on his way
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin’ glass
Seven years of bad luck, good things in your past

When you believe in things that you don’t understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain’t the way, no, no, no

Lady Jane
(Queensryche)

Sitting all alone, inside, today Jane.
The other girls are home, we’re playing a new game,
The voice is very, very close, you like it that way,
and we’re feeling rather warm inside.

Are you smiling or afraid ?
You can have it either way.

Lady Jane your eyes are wide today,
and the world is looking very strange, you must proclaim !
It’s quite a scary, scary ride we take, Lady Jane.

Yesterday seemed very dark, but now it’s bright,
your clouds have gone away.
Sensory perception peaking at this time,
electric waves of sound are filling Janie’s mind today
calling out to Janie as you drift away, Dont be afraid,
they’re only your illusions anyway.

Lady Jane your eyes are wide today,
and we’re sure you won’t forget the things
you’ve seen today.

I wish I knew how it would feel to be free
(Nina Simone)

I wish I knew how
It would feel to be free
I wish I could break
All the chains holding me
I wish I could say
All the things that I should say
Say ’em loud say ’em clear
For the whole round world to hear
I wish I could share
All the love that’s in my heart
Remove all the bars
That keep us apart
I wish you could know
What it means to be me
Then you’d see and agree
That every man should be free

I wish I could give
All I’m longin’ to give
I wish I could live
Like I’m longin’ to live
I wish I could do
All the things that I can do
And though I’m’m way over due
I’d’d be starting a new

Well I wish I could be
Listrke a bird in the sky
How sweet it would be
If I found I could fly
Oh I’d’d soar to the sun
And look down at the sea
Than I’d sing cos I know – yea
Then I’d sing cos I know – yea
Then I’d sing cos I know
I’d’d know how it feels
Oh I’d know how it feels to be free
Yea Yea! Oh, I’d know how it feels
Yes I’d know
Oh, I’d know
How it feels
How it feels
To be free

I Woke Up In A Strange Place
(Jeff Buckley)

The ghost comes to visit with my keys in his pocket
Kisses on my mouth with his eyes rolling out of their socket
Memories crumbling under steel resistance
I was torn out like pages from the book of existence

I woke up in a strange place
My mind a blur and some blood on my chin
I made a call for that black death cab
My destination was moving on in
And I remember words that you told me
Came down so hard, so plain
Fate is gonna find your love in a glass of champagne

Love came calling as a counterfeit mistress
Stealing from the pockets of a sadomasochist
Mouthing for his place like a tongue on crystal meth
Her cigarette smell like the fear inside my chest

I woke up in a strange place
Music so loud I spit up my beer
I took a ride in that black death cab
My destination is already here
Easy now, car is speeding up
For my last chance crash into freedom
Fate is gonna find you love in your glass of champagne

Sweat pours down on me in the back seat sleeping
She watches from her empty bed at the window weeping
Ghost guns that motor to the promised land promised me
Draw bridge abandoned and the motor leads no where

This is a song for the dislocated
Who want to love but are doomed to be hated
Because the lies of the spirit possess you
Because the eyes of your lover resist you
Listen up you keep your aim steady as your temple turns to kiss the pistol
Fate is gonna find your love in a glass of champagne

Californication

Psychic spies from China
Try to steal your minds elation
Little girls from Sweden
Dream of silver screen quotations
And if you want these kind of dreams
It’s Californication

It’s the edge of the world
And all of western civilization
The sun may rise in the east
At least it settles in the final location
It’s understood that Hollywood
Sells Californication

Pay your surgeon very well to break the spell of aging
Celebrity skin is this your chin or is that war you’re waging

First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Californication

Marry me girl be my fairy to the world
Be my very own constellation
A teenage bride with a baby inside
Getting high on information
And buy me a star on the boulevard
It’s Californication

Space may be the final frontier
But it’s made in a Hollywood basement
Cobain can you hear the spheres
Singing songs off station to station
And Alderon’s not far away
It’s Californication

Born and raised by those who praise control of population
Everybodys been there and I don’t mean on vacation

First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of californication
Dream of californication

Destruction leads to a very rough road
But it also breeds creation
And earthquakes are to a girls guitar
They’re just another good vibration
And tidal waves couldnt save the world
From Californication

Pay your surgeon very well to break the spell of aging
Sicker than the rest there is no test but this is what you’re craving

First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of californication
Dream of californication

Angie
(Rolling Stones)

Angie, Angie, when will those clouds all disappear?
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can’t say we’re satisfied
But Angie, Angie, you can’t say we never tried
Angie, you’re beautiful, but ain’t it time we said good-bye?
Angie, I still love you, remember all those nights we cried?
All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear:
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here?
Oh, Angie, don’t you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet
I hate that sadness in your eyes
But Angie, Angie, ain’t it time we said good-bye?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can’t say we’re satisfied
But Angie, I still love you, baby
Ev’rywhere I look I see your eyes
There ain’t a woman that comes close to you
Come on baby, dry your eyes
But Angie, Angie, ain’t it good to be alive?
Angie, Angie, they can’t say we never tried

Holy Smoke
(Iron Maiden)

Believe in me – send no money
Died on the cross, that ain’t funny
But my so called friends they’re making me a joke
They missed out what I said like I never spoke
They choose what they wanna hear – don’t tell a lie
They just leave out the truth as they’re watching you die
Saving your soul by taking your money
Flies around shit, bees around honey

Holy Smoke, Holy Smoke,
Plenty bad preachers for The Devil to stoke
Feed’em in feet first this is no joke
This is thirsty work making Holy Smoke

Jimmy the Reptile and all his friends
Say their gonna be with you at the end
Burning records burning books
Holy soldiers, Nazi looks
Crocodile smiles, just wait a while
Till the TV queen gets her make-up clean
I’ve lived in filth, I’ve lived in sin
And I still smell cleaner than the shit you’re in

Holy Smoke, Holy Smoke,
Plenty bad preachers for The Devil to stoke
Feed’em in feet first this is no joke
This is thirsty work making Holy Smoke

Holy Smoke – smells good

They ain’t religious but they ain’t no fools
When Noah built his Cadillac it was cool
Two by two they’re still going down
And the satellite circus just left town
I think they’re strange and when they’re dead
They can have a Lincoln for their bed
Friend of the president trick of the tail
Now they ain’t got a prayer 100 years in jail

My Favourite Game

I don’t know what you’re looking for
you haven’t found it baby, that’s for sure
You rip me up and spread me all around
in the dust of the deed of time

And this is not a case of lust, you see
it’s not a matter of you versus of me
It’s fine the way you want me on your own
but in the end it’s always me alone

And I’m losing my favourite game
you’re losing your mind again
I’m losing my baby
losing my favourite game

I only know what I’ve been working for
another you so I could love you more
I really thought that I could take you there
but my experiment is not getting us anywhere

I had a vision I could turn you right
a stupid mission and a lethal fight
I should have seen it when my hope was new
my heart is black and my body is blue

And I’m losing my favourite game
you’re losing your mind again
I’m losing my favourite game
I’ve tried but you’re still the same
I’m losing my baby
you’re losing a saviour and a saint

Mother’s little helper
(Rolling Stones)

What a drag it is getting old
“Kids are different today,”
I hear ev’ry mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though she’s not really ill
There’s a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mother’s little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day

“Things are different today,”
I hear ev’ry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husband’s just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mother’s little helper
And two help her on her way, get her through her busy day

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old

“Men just aren’t the same today”
I hear ev’ry mother say
They just don’t appreciate that you get tired
They’re so hard to satisfy, You can tranquilize your mind
So go running for the shelter of a mother’s little helper
And four help you through the night, help to minimize your plight

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old

“Life’s just much too hard today,”
I hear ev’ry mother say
The pusuit of happiness just seems a bore
And if you take more of those, you will get an overdose
No more running for the shelter of a mother’s little helper
They just helped you on your way, through your busy dying day

Feeling Good

Birds flying high you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Breeze driftin’ on by you know how I feel

(refrain:)x2
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good

Fish in the sea you know how I feel
River running free you know how I feel
Blossom on the tree you know how I feel

(refrain)

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don’t you know
Butterflies all havin’ fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
That’s what I mean

And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me

Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the pine you know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel

Too much love will kill you
(May, Musker, Lamers)

I’m just the pieces of the man I used to be
Too many bitter tears are raining down on me
I’m far away from home
And I’ve been facing this alone
For much too long
I feel like no-one ever told the truth to me
About growing up and what a struggle it would be
In my tangled state of mind
I’ve been looking back to find
Where I went wrong

Too much love will kill you
If you cant make up your mind
Torn between the lover
And the love you leave behind
You’re headed for disaster
‘cos you never read the signs
Too much love will kill you
Every time

I’m just the shadow of the man I used to be
And it seems like theres no way out of this for me
I used to bring you sunshine
Now all I ever do is bring you down
How would it be if you were standing in my shoes
Can’t you see that it’s impossible to choose
No there’s no making sense of it
Every way I go I’m bound to lose

Too much love will kill you
Just as sure as none at all
It’ll drain the power thats in you
Make you plead and scream and crawl
And the pain will make you crazy
You’re the victim of your crime
Too much love will kill you
Every time

Too much love will kill you
It’ll make your life a lie
Yes, too much love will kill you
And you wont understand why
You’d give your life, you’d sell your soul
But here it comes again
Too much love will kill you
In the end…
In the end.

Lush Life
(Billy Strayhorn)

I used to visit all the very gay places
Those come what may places
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life
To get the feel of life…
From jazz and cocktails.

The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces
With distant gay traces
That used to be there you could see where they’d been washed away
By too many through the day…
Twelve o’clock tales.

Then you came along with your siren of song
To tempt me to madness!
I thought for a while that your poignant smile was tinged with the sadness
Of a great love for me.

Ah yes! I was wrong…
Again,
I was wrong.

Life is lonely again,
And only last year everything seemed so sure.
Now life is awful again,
A troughful of hearts could only be a bore.
A week in paris will ease the bite of it,
All I care is to smile in spite of it.

I’ll forget you, I will
While yet you are still burning inside my brain.
Romance is mush,
Stifling those who strive.
I’ll live a lush life in some small dive…
And there I’ll be, while I rot
With the rest of those whose lives are lonely, too..

Fire And Rain
(James Taylor)

Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just cant remember who to send it to

I’ve seen fire and Ive seen rain
I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I’d see you again

Wont you look down upon me, Jesus
You’ve got to help me make a stand
You’ve just got to see me through another day
My body’s aching and my time is at hand
And I wont make it any other way

Oh, I’ve seen fire and Ive seen rain
I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that Id see you again

Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows itll turn your head around
Well, there’s hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

Oh, I’ve seen fire and Ive seen rain
I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I’d see you, baby, one more time again, now

Thought I’d see you one more time again
There’s just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I’d see you, thought I’d see you fire and rain, now

No One Knows
(Queens of the Stone Age)

We get some rules to follow
That and this
These and those
No one knows

We get these pills to swallow
How they stick
In your throat
Taste like gold

Oh, what you do to me
No one knows

And I realize you’re mine
Indeed a fool am I
And I realize you’re mine
Indeed a fool am I
Ahh

I journey through the desert
Of the mind
With no hope
I follow

I drift along the ocean
Dead lifeboats
in the sun
they come undone

Pleasently caving in
I come undone

And I realize you’re mine
Indeed a fool am I
And I realize you’re mine
Indeed a fool am I
Ahhh

Heaven smiles above me
What a gift here below
But no one knows

The Gift that you give to me
No one knows

Waiting for darkness
(Ozzy Ozbourne)

Waiting for darkness
Why doesn’t anybody see?
Deafened by silence
Why doesn’t anybody hear?

Playing with fire
But they’re screaming
When they’re burned
Out of the sunlight
Hasn’t anybody learned?

I know what they find
Is in their mind
It’s what they want to see
Spare me from the light
Here comes the night
And here I’ll stay
Waiting for darkness

Promise me rebirth
And then you tear me from the womb
Give me my freedom
And then you lock me in a tomb

I’m waiting for darkness
You gotta believe, you gotta believe its true
I’m waiting for darkness
I just can’t conceive why darkness is overdue.

Who knows the answers
Is it friend or is it foe?
Don’t ask me questions
There are things you shouldn’t know

Lost in the Ozone
(Motorhead)

I am a drifter on a hungry empty sea
There is no one on earth to rescue me
The winter storms they freeze me
Summer burned alive
I can’t remember when another soul passed by

Marooned and stranded, on the Islands of the Damned
There is no one on earth to take my hand
There is no voice to speak, no soul for company
The sun goes down like blood into the Western Sea

Alone and dying, and a thousand miles from home
I know I never was so broken and alone
I searched the sky for God, shivered to the bone
Drowned in sorrow, Lost in the Ozone

No hand for me, abandon me
Wash over me, watch over me, drowned forever

Alone and crying, and a thousand miles astray
Alone upon the cruel sea, forsworn and cast away
I turned my face to god, but his face was turned away
Lost in the Ozone, nothing left to say

Lost in the Ozone, nothing left to say
Nothing left to say, nothing left to say
Wash over me

A Design for life
(Manic Street Preachers)

Libraries gave us power
Then work came and made us free
But what price now for a shallow piece of dignity

I wish I had a bottle
Right here in my dirty face to wear the scars
To show from where I came

We don’t talk about love we only want to get drunk
And we are not allowed to spend
As we are told that this is the end

A design for life x4

I wish I had a bottle
Right here in my pretty face to wear the scars
To show from where I came

We don’t talk about love we only want to get drunk
And we are not allowed to spend
As we are told that this is the end

A design for life x4

We don’t talk about love we only want to get drunk
And we are not allowed to spend
As we are told that this is the end

A design for life x4
